ADVANCED TECHNIQUES
Functional movement is the ability to move your body with proper muscle and joint function, effortlessly and without pain. Learning how to be biomechanically efficient as you move through life—whether it’s for sports, fitness, or daily activities— is a critical part of your overall health and well-being. Our physical therapists:
- Assess movement patterns
- Identify problems with posture and body mechanics
- Help prevent injury and promote pain-free, healthy movement through a series of corrective exercises that increase range of motion and eliminate muscle imbalances
Our physical therapists are certified in:
- FMS: Functional Movement Systems
- SFMA: Selective Functional Movement Systems
- TPI: Titleist Performance Institute—the world’s leading educational organization dedicated to how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing. Allows golfers to build endurance and play the game at their highest level without causing injury.
- Graston Technique®: A trademarked therapeutic method for diagnosing and treating disorders of the skeletal muscles and related connective tissue
This hands-on therapy is commonly used to treat strains, sprains, contusions, tendonitis, bursitis, and stress injuries. Physical therapists may use gentle pressure, stretching, or thermal therapy (hot and cold) to:
- Relax tense, sore muscles by increasing blood circulation
- Reduce muscle spasms and relieve pain
- Maximize range of motion by breaking down scar tissue and tight fibrous tissue
Techniques include:
Active Release Technique (ART): A patented technique that treats damaged soft tissues, such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia (fibrous tissue around a muscle or organ), and nerves
HAWK Grip Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM): A device that helps with soft tissue mobilization
CentraState offers Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) therapy, a cutting-edge technique that accelerates rehabilitation and promotes optimal recovery. By safely restricting blood flow to specific areas while performing low-intensity exercises, BFR therapy offers several benefits, including:
- Increased muscle strength and size
- Accelerated post-surgical recovery
- Improved cardiovascular fitness
- Effective pain reduction
During BFR therapy, our experienced physical therapists apply a specialized tourniquet system and guide you through targeted exercises. This personalized approach ensures safe and efficient progress towards your goals. If you’re recovering from an injury, surgery, or experiencing muscle weakness, BFR therapy can be a valuable addition to your rehabilitation plan.
Certified physical therapists at CentraState offer dry needling, a therapy technique aimed at releasing muscle tension and alleviating pain. By inserting thin needles into “trigger points” within muscles, dry needling targets knots and tightness, promoting relaxation and improved function.
For conditions causing acute and chronic pain, physical therapists often use radial shockwave therapy, myofascial release (MFR), electrical stimulation, and ultrasound. These gentle, pain-free therapies help:
- Increase blood flow
- Relax tight tissues
- Break down scar tissue
- Reduce inflammation
- Relax muscle spasms
- Ease tendon problems
- Increase mobility
- Decrease pain
CentraState’s Physical Therapy Department offers the ZeroG® Gait and Balance System to help patients safely improve balance, gait, and functional independence. This dynamic system protects patients from falls, while providing body-weight support as patients practice walking, balance tasks, sit-to-stand maneuvers, and stairs. Because ZeroG is mounted to an overhead track, there are no barriers between the patient and therapist.
Patients with conditions such as stroke, balance disorders, orthopedic injuries, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and neurological impairments can benefit using the ZeroG system.

CentraState’s Physical Therapy Department offers the AlterG® Anti-Gravity Treadmill, a cutting-edge rehabilitation tool designed to reduce the impact of gravity on the patient’s body during exercise. The treadmill uses a lifting mechanism to create a sensation of weightlessness while walking or running, which reduces the stress on their feet, ankles, shins, knees, hips and back. This is beneficial after sports injuries, knee and hip replacements, or stroke.
