If you’re carrying extra pounds, have high blood pressure, or a cholesterol-heavy diet, you could be at risk for diabetes or have a condition known as prediabetes, where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Research has found that more than one in three adults has prediabetesand about 90% don’t even know it. The good news is you can reverse its course with prediabetes treatment.

  • Develop a sustainable, healthier approach to eating
  • Increase physical activity by participating in activities you enjoy
  • Reach a healthier weight and learn strategies for weight maintenance.

Diabetes FAQs

Pre-existing or hereditary factors can increase your risk for developing diabetes. Having multiple risks significantly increases your chances of developing diabetes. These risks include:

• Being overweight
• Being over 40 years old
• Being of African-American, Latino, Native American, or Asian ethnicity
• Having a parent, sibling, grandparent, aunt, or uncle who has/had diabetes
• Having delivered one child or more who weighed more than nine pounds
• Having a sedentary lifestyle

Symptoms of diabetes can sometimes go unnoticed. Having your blood sugar tested by a physician or at a health screening is the only way to know for sure if you have diabetes.
Diabetes symptoms can include:

• Urinating often
• Feeling very thirsty
• Feeling very hungry—even though you are eating
• Extreme fatigue
• Blurry vision
• Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
• Weight loss—even though you are eating more (type 1)
• Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2)

The hemoglobin A1C test gives an average of your blood glucose control over the past 2-3 months. While it is used to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes, it is also an essential tool for evaluating how well you’re managing diabetes.

CentraState offers A1C tests in Freehold, NJ. To schedule an appointment for an A1C test, call 732-294-2574. Additional services through the diabetes center include glucose monitoring, medication management, and meal planning.
