When you hear the term “zero gravity,” you may think of astronauts and space travel. Now, a similar environment is helping CentraState patients improve their balance.
The ZeroG® Gait and Balance System, a new treatment option available at CentraState’s OceanFirst Rehabilitation Center, helps patients more safely and confidently practice walking and balance exercises.
“ZeroG is a great option for patients to improve their balance without the fear of falling,” says Jodi Gittleman, MA, CCC-SLP, CentraState’s director of rehabilitation. “It helps them regain motor skills, rebuild muscle strength and retrain their nervous system. CentraState is one of only six facilities in the state to offer this technology.”
Who Can Benefit
The system is appropriate for adults and children with balance disorders, neurological impairments, stroke, orthopedic injuries or surgery, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord or traumatic brain injuries, muscular dystrophy or amputated limbs.
With ZeroG, patients can start high-intensity rehabilitation much sooner in the recovery process. The system features a comfortable harness attached to a track on the ceiling. The harness supports the body, creating a reduced-gravity environment that can be tailored to each patient’s specific needs, abilities and goals.
