While you may typically seek the expertise of your primary care physician or main health provider for physical concerns, these healthcare professionals also serve as an important resource for the health of your mind.
“Primary care providers are highly skilled in treating all aspects of a patient’s health,” says Shira Meyer, DO, internal medicine physician at Family Practice of CentraState. “They’re a great starting point when people are experiencing difficulties with mood, anxiety, depression and other mental health symptoms.”
Physical and mental health concerns can be related, and a mental health screening is a standard part of any physical. But beyond that, primary care providers offer a safe space for mental health concerns by giving patients the ability to openly discuss symptoms, find support and benefit from a personalized care plan.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Before your visit, jot down how you’ve been feeling, any mood changes and what’s happening in your life, such as your job, relationships, finances and stressors. You may also want to bring a trusted friend or family member for support.
“Your physician can provide the best care when you’re open and transparent in sharing details about your daily life,” says Dr. Meyer.
Primary care providers are qualified to prescribe mental health medications. They can also refer you to a psychiatrist, counselor or other specialist. In addition, your doctor may recommend holistic therapies, including exercise, nutritional approaches, meditation, acupuncture and mindfulness practices.
“Most people face struggles at some point in their lives,” adds Dr. Meyer. “It’s important to discuss your mental health at every visit with your physician, especially because issues can be fluid and patients may experience flare-ups after being stable for some time.”
If you are experiencing changes in your mood, appetite, sleep or concentration, or you notice a loss of interest in activities you enjoy, reach out to your doctor. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988.
