This January, CentraState launched a Supervised Exercise Therapy Program designed to aid those with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD is caused by the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries, restricting blood flow to the kidneys, stomach, arms, legs, and feet. About 1 in 20 adults over age 50 and 1 in 5 over age 70 have PAD, according to the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
The new program, which involves walking on a treadmill under the supervision of a trained cardiac rehabilitation nurse, is designed to build endurance, alleviate the symptoms of PAD, and possibly prevent the need for surgery. The program runs for 12 weeks, featuring exercise sessions three times per week for a total of 36 visits.
A physician prescription is required to participate, and the program is covered by Medicare. To determine if other insurance coverage is available, patients can contact their insurance companies for individual policy and plan details.
