The Scoop On Protein Powder

Protein powder is a popular trend. But does it really measure up to the hype? CentraState registered dietitian Chelsea Dyer, RD, a protein powder user herself, provides the scoop.

PROS:

Protein powder can help build muscle and repair tissue, keep you feeling fuller for longer and increase protein intake in an easy-to- consume form.

CONS:

Excess protein can lead to digestive discomfort and, in rare cases, kidney issues. To avoid this, keep your protein powder intake between 25 to 50 grams of your total daily protein consumption.

THE BEST TYPES:

Protein powder is classified as a dietary supplement in the U.S., which means it is not regulated by the FDA. The best protein powder is one that is third-party tested for safety and purity and meets your unique dietary needs and preferences – whether that’s egg white or plant-based protein or whey and casein, which come from dairy products.

PROTEIN POWDER HACK:

Dyer likes mixing protein powder into yogurt and using it in coffee instead of creamer.

KEEP IN MIND:

It’s always a good idea to check with your doctor before adding any supplement to your diet.
