CentraState Healthcare System critical care nurse Maya Washington, BSN, RN, was recently awarded with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®. Maya was nominated by two different patient families that highlighted her skilled nursing and ability to make the patient and their families feel more comfortable about their hospitalizations.
“Maya exemplifies nursing excellence that characterizes our nursing team at CentraState,” says Dawn Kline, BSN, RNC-LRN, DHA, Executive Director of Maternal Child Health & Nursing Administration. “She is one of the strong leaders and compassionate healers who cares for our patients and community.”
An excerpt from one of her nominations reads:
”Maya is an asset to your Critical Care Team and needs to be reminded that what she does on a daily basis is certainly appreciated by this outside visitor here to see his elderly mom. That attitude has an impact on the patient’s road to recovery; words cannot do it justice for it is intangible. Thank you from the depths of my heart, Maya!”
The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that is the leader in meaningful recognition of nurses and was created to express gratitude by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, a little-known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
