CentraState earns national praise for heart-failure care

Patients treated for heart failure at CentraState Medical Center have one of the highest survival rates in the U.S, according to a government report released this week. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) calls it a low mortality (death) rate, and CMS recognized CentraState and 40 other hospitals in the country for the highest-quality care to heart failure patients. This rate at CentraState is 8.3 percent, compared to a national average of 11.1 percent.

The federal health agency also released mortality rates this week for heart attack and pneumonia treatment. CentraState was at the national average for both, at 16.2 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively.

CMS measured the mortality rates of Medicare patients in the three categories within 30 days of care from July 2006 through June 2007.

New treatment for heartburn offered

A new incisionless procedure to treat patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or heartburn is offered at CentraState Medical Center. Surgeons here performed the first such procedure in New Jersey on August 19 to treat a 26-year-old male, using a device called EsophyX™ to create a valve between the stomach and the esophagus, restoring the natural, physiological anatomy. New Sports Performance program

Runners-Sports performance improvementWant to run faster? Play better? Avoid injury?

CentraState's specialized Sports Performance program helps children and adults of all athletic abilities and skill levels—from recreational to competitive—improve their performance and take their sports training to the next level.

Participants undergo an initial, one-on-one assessment with a sports performance specialist to determine their athletic profile based on age, goals and skill level. The performance team then works with them on muscular balancing and movement mechanics, as well as improving speed, agility, strength, power, conditioning, and reaction time. One-on-one, group, and team training is offered, as well as baseball/softball-specific training and Titleist® Performance Institute (TPI) golf training.

CentraState Sports Performance is located in the 3-2 Count athletic training facility at 323A Fairfield Road, Freehold. For more information, call  (732) 462-0058.
